Pride Takes on New Meaning

June 1, 2024. Pride Month is not only a celebration of the LGBTQIA+ community, it is recognition of the painful past. For more on the history of Pride, see Emily Sklodosky's blog, "Happy Pride Month."

It is also marks a recommitment to the fight for equality for LGBTQIA+ people. With all of the attachks on the rights and lives of the LGBTQIA+ community, Pride has taken on new meaning. It has become a fight for survival.

Our partners ar the Trans Formation Project have been tracking anti-trans legislation. There are currently 50 bills pending on the Hill and hundreds in Statehouses across the country. And yes, both blue and red states.

The latest assault against humanity - eliminating diversity, equity and inclusion ("DEI") policies - is hitting the LGBTQIA+ community particularly hard. Georgia is a prime example where the USG Board of Regents eliminated DEI policies across the public education system. As detailed in this April 24th open letter written through a collaborative student effort and posted by student pride, the Georgia Southern University elminated any policy, including an allyship program for LGBTQIA+ people, designed to ensure their safety, that does not benefit all students, and they removed all Pride gear from the school store.

This is a naked attempt to erase the LGBTQIA+ community. And we are seeing it across the country. The impact is devasting.

It is not surprising that the Transformation Project, the National Center For Lesbian Rights, and numerous other LGBTQIA+-focused organizations have joined us in calling on President Biden to publish the Equal Rights Amendment. The ERA is the only way to stop this and finally guaratee equality for all.

We hope you will join us in the fight. We have never needed your supprt more.
